If you frequent the wedding blogosphere then you should know by now that no one does effortless yet super stylish nuptial vibes quite like our friends down under. And folks, this Byron Bay bash proves no exception. A masterful mix of laidback luxe details and elevated event DIY made for a one-of-a-kind wedding. When the R&G team stumbled upon the gorgeous photos from this celebration on the galley page of their Riley & Grey wedding website, we just knew we had to tap the couple in question, Sarah & Lehi, for the full story.
In fact, we found so much wedding inspiration among the images the couple graciously shared with us that this post is only the first installment of a two part Riley & Grey real wedding feature. Get the scoop on how these two transformed a stunning Byron bay backyard and made this unique bohemian beach wedding a reality without a wedding planner. And don’t forget to tune back in later this week for more wedding wisdom from the cool couple as well as the countless killer reception shots that deserved their very own post. But first…
Tell us a little bit about yourselves
We met about 12 years ago in Melbourne through mutual friends and after a year or so of building an awesome friendship we realized there were much bigger feelings there so have been pretty inseparable ever since! We travelled a lot together in our 20s and have lived in a few different countries for study and work (Mexico, New York and London). Lehi popped the question, ring in hand over breakfast one day in 2011 so we had a fantastically long engagement which was a really special time that we totally savored. When we finally landed home in Australia, we decided it was time to tie the knot!
How would you describe your personal style and how do you think that translated into your event?
We walk a fine line between keeping our style classic and timeless with a little bohemian color and flair thrown in. We definitely managed to immerse this into our wedding. Byron Bay is a place that just demands a little boho style, but being cosmopolitan people and lovers of classic, clean tailored style, we brought the two together and it surprisingly worked quite well!
On that note, what was the inspiration behind your bridal look (beauty, dress etc.)? Do you have any matrimonial muses? Same questions go for the groom.
I tried to keep the word “Classic” in mind when looking for, and ultimately designing my dress. I am lucky enough to have a friend who is a dress designer so we took elements of all my favorite looks and created something that was very me. I was also in love with the Dolce and Gabbana SS14 campaign, so hair and make-up were very much influenced by their runway look. Grace Kelly with her beautiful sheer lace high-neck and sleeves was always an inspiration, but we paired this back a bit with bohemian romanticism à la Kate Moss. Lehi has always had a eye for beautifully tailored clothes so had his suit custom made by the Suit Shop in Melbourne who had their start on Saville Row in London. We both went for a bit of luxe with our shoes, Lehi had patent Saint Laurent oxfords and I went for Valentino Rockstuds so I could wear them lots afterwards!
Favorite moment(s) of the big day?
The ceremony of course was such an unforgettable moment. Feeling the energy and love of every special person in your life holding you up through a big life moment is such a unique experience and incomparable feeling. We felt like we were gently sat on a cloud and we just floated our way through the rest of the day on a total emotional high. Our hearts swelled when our parents gave their speeches and my godfather singing our first dance song was pretty special too and still gets me choked up.
…On the other hand, any minor/major big day disasters you now laugh at?
Luckily none worth mentioning! The good completely overshadowed any of the tiny mistakes. It didn’t rain, disaster averted.
